The Difference Between Automatic and Manual Hall Pass Ending Methods

Understanding Hall Pass ending methods: Automatic vs. Manual

Permission Level: Owners

Set up your Hall Passes to end Automatically

When you set your Hall Pass ending method to Automatic, Hall passes are designed to automatically expire at the end of their designated duration, without requiring any manual action from students or teachers.

To set your hall passes for an automatic ending method, simply navigate to Hall Pass > Settings tab > select "Automatic" under the "Hall pass ending method" option.

We highly recommend opting for automatically ending passes as our best practice as it minimizes disruptions during class time and provides comprehensive reporting on student movements across campus.

The primary advantage of automatic-ended hall passes is its simplicity and ease of management. It is one less step for both teachers and students, ensuring seamless operation of the hall pass system.

Note: Once expired, they will disappear from both the active hall pass dashboard and the student's device. However, by selecting the "ended" filter in the Hall Pass Dashboard, educators gain clear insights into student activity in the Hall Pass Dashboard.

Set up your Hall Passes to end Manually

When you set your Hall Pass ending method to Manual; Hall passes require action from either the student or teacher upon the student's return to the classroom at the designated end time.

Additionally, a new tab labelled "Hall pass reporting timeout (mins)" will become visible in the settings, where you can specify the duration for automatic expiration if the pass is not manually ended. For instance, in the provided example, hall passes will automatically expire after 60 minutes if not ended manually following their designated duration.

Manually ending hall passes, whether by the student or teacher upon the student's return to the classroom, offers valuable benefits and potential pitfalls.

The benefits of manually ending hall passes include the ability to track specific minute-by-minute data regarding students' return times. This data becomes highly valuable for assessing punctuality trends, identifying patterns of late returns, and generating real-time reports on classroom attendance. Such insights enable educators to address tardiness issues promptly and efficiently manage student behaviour.

However, there is a downside when individuals forget to end their hall passes, which is a common mistake. This can lead to a decrease in the accuracy and reliability of the collected data. When passes are not closed on time, the information becomes outdated and cannot be used for meaningful analysis.

If manual pass endings frequently go beyond their designated time, it becomes essential for educators to implement measures of accountability. This involves engaging with students who are late in returning to the classroom to understand the reasons behind their delays and implementing strategies to ensure that they adhere to the established timelines. By encouraging everyone to promptly end their hall passes, we reinforce the importance of punctuality and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the system.

To summarize, you have the flexibility to choose the option that best suits your school's workflow. However, we highly recommend starting with automatic expiration for hall passes due to its efficiency, convenience, and ability to provide valuable insights into student behavior on campus.
