Streamline your school's discipline workflow by linking Minga’s Check-In Manager directly to your Behavior Consequences. By creating a dedicated detention check-in reason and pairing it with a specific consequence, you can mark the detention as served without needing to check it off of a report. When a student is scanned into detention, Minga instantly resolves their outstanding consequence, saving your staff from tedious manual spreadsheet updates while keeping student accountability airtight.

Managing Detentions with Minga Check-Ins
Automating detention attendance saves hours of paperwork and keeps student accountability airtight. By linking your Check In Manager to your Behavior Consequences, Mingas handles the tracking for you.
Here is how to set up a seamless detention check-in workflow.
Step 1: Create a Detention Check-In Reason
First, you need to create a dedicated tracking reason for students arriving at the detention room.
Step-by-step Guide to Creating a Check In Reason
Step-by-step Guide to Creating a Check In Reason
Navigate to Check In and open the Reasons tab.
Click Create Reason.
Enter
• Use the same wording as the detention consequence (example: Lunch Detention).Click Select Roles and choose Student and Student Leaders.
• Role selection controls who can be checked in using this reason.Select the consequence under Auto Complete Most Outstanding Consequence.
• Choose the detention consequence that should be completed when the student checks in.Click Create.
• The reason becomes available in staff tools for detention check-in.
Step 2: Attach the Consequence for Auto-Resolution
This is where the magic happens. You will link this check-in to your predefined behavior consequences so Minga can do the heavy lifting.
While still in the Create Reason window, locate the Auto Complete First Outstanding Consequence dropdown.
Select the corresponding consequence you want to resolve (e.g., selecting Lunch Detention means this check-in will clear that specific penalty).
Click Create to save your new reason.
For a detailed walkthrough on creating Check In Reasons, refer to the Set Up and Manage Check In help article.
✅ Outcome: Your detention check-in reason is now saved and available to staff. When a student is checked in using this reason, Minga will instantly mark the linked consequence as complete.
💎 Tip: Create one reason per detention type. If your school runs both Lunch Detention and After-School Detention, create a separate check-in reason for each and link each to its corresponding consequence.
Check In Methods
Step 3: Choose your check in method
Minga offers three ways to check students in to detention. Each method resolves the linked consequence automatically. Choose the one that fits your school's workflow.
For all three methods, select the detention check-in reason you created in Step 1 when checking the student in.
Method | Best for | Limitations |
Kiosk | Student-led, high-volume detention rooms | Students can check in and leave before serving the full detention |
My Class | Teachers who run detention and manage their own roster | Requires searching for students not on the teacher's class list |
My Tools | Admin and non-classroom staff who don't use My Class | More steps than Kiosk or My Class |
Kiosk
A kiosk lets students check themselves in by entering their student ID or scanning their digital ID card, with no staff action required.
Set up a device as a kiosk in the detention room.
Direct students to enter their ID or scan their card at the kiosk when they arrive.
Instruct students to select the detention check-in reason from the kiosk screen.
For a step-by-step guide to setting up a kiosk device, see Teachers' Guide to Kiosk Mode.
Note: Kiosk check-in confirms a student arrived. It does not confirm they stayed. Assign a staff member to monitor the room if full-duration accountability is required.
My Class
Teachers can check a student in to detention directly from their My Class dashboard without leaving their daily view.
Navigate to My Class using the left sidebar.
Locate the student. If the student is not enrolled in your class, use the Search field to find them by name.
Select the student's card.
Click Check In and select the detention check-in reason.
For a full walkthrough, see Use Check In/Check Out Tools for Teachers and Staff.
My Tools
My Tools is accessible to all Owner, Admin, Manager, and Teacher roles and is the best option for staff who don't use My Class as part of their daily workflow.
Navigate to My Tools using the left sidebar.
Click Check In.
Search for the student by name or ID.
Select the student and choose the detention check-in reason.
Click Confirm.
For a full walkthrough, see Use Check In/Check Out Tools for Teachers and Staff.
✅ Outcome: The student is checked in. Minga marks their linked outstanding consequence as complete immediately. No additional action is needed from staff.
💎 Tip: If a student skips detention, the consequence remains open. If your school uses progressive discipline automations, Minga will flag or escalate the open consequence automatically based on your configured thresholds.
Complete Consequences through Reports
Users with the role of Owner, Manager, or Behavior Manager can complete or resolve consequences through the Consequence History Report. This method is great for admins who want to take action on multiple consequences at once.

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
A student was checked in but their consequence was not marked as complete.
If a student checked in and their consequence was not resolved, confirm that the check in reason used is linked to the correct consequence. Navigate to Check In > Reasons, open the reason used, and verify that the Auto Complete First Outstanding Consequence field is set to the intended consequence. If the field is blank or shows a different consequence, update it and click Save. Re-check the student in using the corrected reason to resolve the outstanding consequence, or resolve it manually through the Consequence History Report.
The detention check-in reason is not appearing for staff in My Class or My Tools.
If a check in reason does not appear in the check in workflow, confirm that Student is included in the Select Roles setting for that reason. Navigate to Check In > Reasons, open the reason, and verify the roles. If Student is not selected, add it and save. The reason will appear immediately.
A student checked in but the wrong consequence was resolved.
If the wrong consequence was marked complete, the check-in reason is linked to the incorrect consequence. Navigate to Check In > Reasons, open the reason, and update the Auto Complete First Outstanding Consequence dropdown to the correct consequence. Save the change. To correct the previously resolved consequence, navigate to the Consequence History Report and manually reopen or re-assign the consequence as needed.
Staff cannot find a student when checking in through My Class.
If a student does not appear on the teacher's My Class roster, the student is not enrolled in that teacher's class list. Use the Search field in My Class to find the student by name or student ID. Alternatively, use My Tools > Check In, which allows any Owner, Admin, Manager, or Teacher to check in any student regardless of class enrollment.
A student checked in to detention multiple times for the same outstanding consequence.
Minga resolves only the first outstanding consequence that matches the linked consequence type when a student checks in. If a student has multiple open consequences of the same type, the oldest outstanding one is resolved first. Subsequent check-ins for the same reason will resolve the next oldest open consequence of that type, if one exists.
FAQs
FAQs
Does the consequence resolve immediately when a student checks in, or is there a delay?
The consequence resolves immediately when a student is checked in using a reason linked to that consequence. No additional action is needed from the staff member who performed the check in.
Can I link one check in reason to multiple consequences?
Each check-in reason can be linked to one consequence at a time through the Auto Complete First Outstanding Consequence setting. If your school has multiple detention types (for example, Lunch Detention and After-School Detention), create a separate check-in reason for each and link each reason to its corresponding consequence.
What happens if a student checks in but does not have any outstanding consequences?
If a student is checked in using a detention reason but has no outstanding consequence linked to that reason, Minga records the check-in but does not resolve any consequence. The check in will appear in your Check In reports. No error is shown to the student or staff member at the time of check in.
What happens if a student skips detention and never checks in?
If a student does not check in, their consequence remains open in Minga. If your school has configured progressive discipline automations, the open consequence will be flagged or escalated automatically based on your threshold rules. To view and act on open consequences, navigate to the Consequence History Report.
Can I use this workflow for any consequence type, or only detentions?
You can link any consequence type to a check-in reason using the Auto Complete First Outstanding Consequence setting — not only detentions. Any consequence that exists in your school's Minga configuration can be linked to a check-in reason and resolved automatically on check-in.
Can a student check in to detention using a kiosk without a staff member present?
Yes. Kiosk mode allows students to check themselves in independently by entering their student ID or scanning their digital ID card. The consequence resolves the moment they check in. Because the kiosk does not confirm how long a student stays, assign a staff member to monitor the room if full-duration attendance is required.
Who can create and edit check-in reasons?
Owners, Admins, and Managers can create and edit check-in reasons in Minga. Teachers can use check in reasons through My Class and My Tools, but cannot create or modify them.
